Jones blow for Mariners

Grimsby will be without midfielder Ritchie Jones for the FA Cup first-round clash with rivals Scunthorpe.

The former Manchester United trainee is ill and will miss out, but Andy Cook returns to contention after recovering from a groin injury.

Scott Neilson, Chris Doig, Alex Rodman and Paddy McLaughlin all trained this week after missing last Saturday's 2-1 victory over Woking.

Boss Paul Hurst will monitor Liam Hearn, who is struggling with an ankle problem, and Lenell John-Lewis (foot) ahead of kick-off.

Scunthorpe trio Matt Sparrow, Deon Burton and Niall Canavan are all hoping to overcome injuries.

Midfielder Sparrow (hamstring), defender Canavan (ankle) and striker Burton (back) all missed last week's draw at Chesterfield, but returned to training this week and are expected to be in contention.

Striker Chris Iwelumo stepped off the bench late on last Saturday following an ankle injury and hopes to play a bigger part, but midfielder Michael Collins (knee), defender Eddie Nolan (hamstring) and winger Andy Welsh (knee) remain sidelined.

Midfielder David Syers is hoping to have permission from Doncaster to appear in the first-round tie after extending his loan spell by another month this week.
