Mitch Rose earns Grimsby victory over Crewe

Mitch Rose's first-half header was enough to earn Grimsby their first win in four league games with a 1-0 victory over Crewe at Blundell Park.

Crewe suffered an early setback when debutant Conor Grant was stretchered off after 18 minutes following a sickening blow while battling for the ball with Rose.

Grimsby reacted well after the long stoppage, and went close when Rose volleyed towards goal, forcing Ben Garratt into a smart save.

The midfielder gave the hosts the lead just moments later though when he latched on to a corner to nod in from close range after 36 minutes.

Grimsby went close after the break when JJ Hooper received the ball on the break before sending his shot just wide of Garratt's near post.

The hosts almost doubled the lead in unusual fashion when Zak Mills' cross from the right hit the top of the crossbar.

Chris Porter was denied late on when James McKeown blocked his initial shot before Karleigh Osborne cleared off the line from the follow-up to secure Grimsby's win.
