The Irishman joined the club on loan from Bradford in March and netted five goals in eight games at the end of the recent League Two campaign to help the Mariners retain their place in the Football League. The former Darlington forward has now agreed to a permanent stay at Blundell Park after being being released by Bantams, despite scoring 11 goals for the Bantams before his surprising exit. Newell is also hoping to agree a deal to bring Millwall striker Adrian Forbes back to the club following a similarly successful loan spell. "I don't know where we'll get to yet with Forbesy because it's a different situation - coming from Millwall on League One wages," he told the Grimsby Telegraph. "It might be different but we are definitely going to speak to him and see what's what."
