The 35-year-old goalkeeper was the subject of a number of enquiries from clubs higher up the football pyramid after leaving Sunderland in May. But, after meeting Newell last week and receiving glowing reports on the Town boss, Colgan opted to sign a two-year deal with the Mariners. "I came down and spoke to the manager and I was very, very impressed by him and his plans for the future," Colgan told the club's official website. "It was really Mike Newell that sold me Grimsby Town Football Club. You know what you're getting with Mike, he's a straight talker and he gives you an honest opinion." Colgan, who had a spell on loan at Blundell Park in 1994, added: "A good friend of mine, Dmitri Kharine, spoke highly of Mike from their time together at Luton, and I spoke to Wayne Henderson and he also spoke very highly of Mike. So this is where I wanted to come."
