Assistant boss leaves Mariners

Watkiss was appointed as assistant manager to Graham Rodger in 2006 but Mike Newell was keen to bring in Brian Stein when he was appointed as manager in November. Chairman John Fenty told the club's website: "Mike Newell always made it clear he wanted Brian Stein around the club alongside him. "When all is said and done, it's unsustainable to have what has effectively been two assistant managers. "With that in mind, sadly, we've had to release Stuart Watkiss and explain to him that we won't be renewing his contract which ends next month. "So we've had to bite the bullet and the manager has made his decision about who he wants to be his assistant next season," he added. "Without question Stuart has given everything to the club."
