Gretna boss Davie Irons accepted that his side already face a battle against the odds to avoid an immediate relegation out of the SPL, following a 1-0 defeat at St Mirren.
The reverse left Gretna three points adrift at the foot of the table and Irons was in no doubt as to the size of the task facing his players.
He said: "We have known all along that this league is a tough league and it is difficult to get points.
"The media will say it is a relegation fight we are in now, but we knew that's the way it was going to be.
"Let's be honest, I could probably tell you the bottom four or five teams in this league, that's the way it goes.
"We were playing a team that is in that group, so it was a game that was vital in terms of trying to get off the bottom.
"But we made it tough for ourselves because there is a gap now and we have to close that gap as soon as we possibly can."
