The Swiss Football League on Friday fined both FC Zurich and Grasshopper for fan violence that led to the cancellation of their October derby, and ordered that the fan sections be shut when the clubs meet next.

The October game was called off due to fighting between rival fans, with the scoreboard showing a 2-1 lead for Grasshopper.

On Friday, the league fined each club 50,000 francs but awarded the game to Grasshopper as it slapped a forfeit on FC Zurich, whose fans were primarily blamed for the violence.

FC Zurich fans had thrown burning torches and firecrackers in the direction of the Grasshopper supporter section, after being provoked by the latter.

But the league found that "no provocation justifies the launch of burning torches towards the crowd."

The league also reprimanded the clubs for failing to provide adequate security to prevent violence from breaking out.
