Torquay 1-1 Gillingham: Report

22 January 2011 18:15
Late Rooney strike rescues Gills Gillingham salvaged a 1-1 draw at Torquay courtesy of a late strike from Luke Rooney. Rooney's 87th-minute effort struck a defender and looped just over the outstretched reach of goalkeeper Scott Bevan to deny the Gulls all three points. United took the lead through top scorer Elliot Benyon in the sixth minute when he pounced after visiting keeper Alan Julian spilled the ball. Gills skipper Barry Fuller gave the ball away to United's Irish playmaker Eunan O'Kane and his long-range shot proved too hot for Julian to handle. Benyon was first to the loose ball and fired home from five yards to take his tally to 14 goals for the season. Julian made amends with a stunning save to deny Danny Stevens as the winger let fly on the run after beating three players. Bevan made a string of fine saves - a double stop from Gills central defender Josh Gowling and another during a goalmouth scramble - as the visitors went in search of a leveller. United central defender Mark Ellis powered over a header from six yards at the start of the second half and Stevens should have put the Gulls two-up from 10 yards after being teed up by Benyon in the 70th minute. And he was made to pay when Rooney struck three minutes from time.
