Gillingham manager Mark Stimson admitted that his time at the club had been frustrating after watching the Gills lose 2-1 at Leeds United - a result that condemned them to relegation.
Stimson has been at the Priestfield Stadium for just over six months but was unable to steer the club out of the bottom four.
He said after the Elland Road defeat: "The performance was like many of those in the last five or six weeks - very good.
"We took a deserved lead against a very good side, in a fantastic atmosphere, but unfortunately we couldn't hold on to that lead and we got pipped at the end.
"I think the word that I'd use to sum up my time at the club is 'frustrating' as we've been so close. In football, it's about a season and the 46 games in this league.
"You have to perform over those games. In the last ten or so games, we've put in some good performances, just like at Leeds, and we haven't come out of those games with as many points as we've deserved.
"But if we can keep the nucleus of this squad, then we'll have a fantastic chance next season."
