Gillingham boss Mark Stimson is confident that new signing Kevin Maher will prove to be an astute acquisition.
The 32-year-old midfielder has penned a two-year contract with the Gills, having left Oldham Athletic at the end of last season.
Stimson told the Kent Messenger: "I don't look at ages, just players. I've signed a lot of young players and they've done well, but you're not going to win anything with youngsters.
"Every team does need experience because and Kevin's got that in abundance.
"He knows how to win things and when you talk to him he still wants to be successful and move forward, which is a massive plus as well."
