Stimson delighted with Gills
12 Aug 2009 - 14:59:40
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson paid tribute to his players following a 2-1 victory over Championship side Plymouth Argyle in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Goals from highly-rated striker Simeon Jackson and Andy Barcham secured the win for the League One new-boys.
The win followed a 5-0 success at home to Swindon on Saturday in their League One debut.
Stimson could not hide his delight at his team's second win in four days.
"Tonight we weren't sure what side Plymouth would put out, but when we got the team sheet we could see they were taking the competition seriously," he said.
"Full credit to the players, in the first half Plymouth had a lot of the ball and they caused a few problems without really hurting us.
"Conceding that goal meant we were up against it a bit, but the players gave it everything.
"It rates quite highly as it is a Championship side, this time last season we got beat 1-0 by Colchester.
"It is an improvement on last year and it is nice to be in the next round of the cup."
