Mark McCammon was the matchwinner with a nerveless kick into the top corner to win the tie 4-3 after David Perkins has skied his penalty for the U's. Simeon Jackson had put the home side ahead with a penalty in normal time before Clive Platt equalised late on with a simple header from two yards to leave the scores level at 1-1 after 90 minutes. "It's really nice to win this game as every time I play Colchester they always seem to get one over on me," said Stimson. "I am really proud of the boys, especially the youngsters who came in looking really bright and getting stuck in. This kind of experience against really top-notch players is vital for their development. It also leaves us with more options as I can send these boys on now knowing I can trust them. "I had to make some changes in the second half as Colchester started to dominate. It paid off with Jackson's penalty and Curtis Weston coming close at the end."
