Gillingham have handed a new contract to midfielder Danny Spiller. Spiller's deal was due to expire on New Year's Eve but boss Andy Hessenthaler moved to snap up the 29-year-old for a further 18-months on Thursday night. Spiller rejoined the Kent club on a short-term deal in the summer and Hessenthaler was keen to retain the services of the playmaker. "Danny loves Gillingham, and he has played the best football of his career for this club," the manager told the club's official website. "We gave him the opportunity to come back in the summer and he has put in some really impressive performances again this season. "We know what we get from Danny, he wears his heart on his sleeve and I'm delighted that we've been able to secure his services for the next 18 months. "We had to work a little bit harder because Danny did attract interest from a couple of clubs and if we hadn't secured his services he might well have been playing in the first division."
