Shrewsbury 0-0 Gillingham: Report

26 February 2011 18:54
Shrews held in stalemate Shrewsbury's hopes of extending their winning run to five in a row were dashed after they were held to a goalless draw at home by promotion rivals Gillingham. The Kent side, who are the fringe of the play-offs, dominated a scrappy first half in which both sides struggled with the swirling wind. But it was the Gills who had the Shrews on the back foot, with burly striker Adebayo Akinfenwa causing problems for the home defence. In the 28th minute he was foiled by a diving save from Ben Smith in the home goal and a minute later was clear again only for the keeper to bravely smother the ball at his feet. Shrewsbury came more into the game in the second half as Jon Taylor volleyed inches over the bar and Mark Wright blasted an effort too high. In the final minute, Shrewsbury skipper Ian Sharp received a straight red card for bringing down Cody McDonald a yard outside the area.
