Scally happy with short-term deals

Gillingham chairman Paul Scally has defended his club's cautious approach to negotiating contracts with new signings. Just one of the Gills' summer recruits, Stefan Payne, has received a deal longer than one-year in length as the Kent club look for an immediate return to League One after relegation last season. But Scally maintains the philosophy adopted by Gills is the correct one, insisting there was still scope for players to extend deals should they prove to be successful at Priestfield. He told the Kent Messenger: "We have a one-year issue and that issue is to get out of this division, and that's all that matters. What happens next season is a different scenario. "We don't necessarily want to give players long-term contracts, they have to earn them. That's the philosophy and I think that's right. "There is the danger that if they do very well then we could lose them. We'll monitor them throughout the season and we can always extend contracts."
