    Richards blow rocks Gills

    01 Jan 2009 - 13:10:02

Gillingham have been hit by the news that defender Garry Richards has been handed a three-match suspension by the Football Association.

The 22-year-old has been punished for his part in a mass brawl during the 1-1 draw at home to Brentford shortly before Christmas, with the Gills having no right of appeal over the punishment.

The ban means that Richards will miss the FA Cup third round clash with Aston Villa, as well as league Two fixtures with Aldershot Town and Morecambe.

Stunned Gills boss Mark Stimson told the club's official website: "I'm shocked. This is a massive blow both for the player and for the club.

"Garry is absolutely devastated and now we will have to face Aston Villa without him, as well as two very important league games."
