Matt Lawrence has revealed the opportunity to work under Andy Hessenthaler convinced him to sign for Gillingham. The 36-year-old defender has penned a one-year deal at Priestfield following his release from Crystal Palace. And Lawrence told Gillingham's official website: "Andy was probably the first person I spoke to at the end of last season. "I know Andy from playing against him. I know what a good player he was and the type of character he was on the pitch and I wanted to work with that kind of person." Lawrence is determined to guide his new club back to League One at the first attempt. "I've played against Gillingham quite a few times when they were in the Championship and League One and I know that the club and fans are desperate to go back up," he added. "As a footballer you thrive on that kind of thing and I hope that I can come in here and get promoted."
