Hughton sinks misfiring Gills

A Cian Hughton strike after nine minutes was enough to earn Lincoln their first points of the season with a 1-0 win against a below-par Gillingham side. Winger Hughton - son of Newcastle boss Chris Hughton - expertly finished after Gills keeper Alan Julian could only block Albert Jarrett's shot from 10 yards The goal did eventually spur the home side on although first-half chances were still rare. Danny Spiller chose to pass rather than shoot following a short corner routine seven minutes before half time. The second half started at an electric pace with Spiller and Adebayo Akinfenwa both testing Imps keeper Joe Anyon early on. A flying one-handed save from Anyon was all that prevented substitute Luke Rooney from levelling the scores with a curling effort after 78 minutes before Akinfenwa saw his effort come back off the post. But Chris Sutton's men held on to lift themselves off the foot of the table and condemn Gillingham to their first defeat of the season.
