Hessenthaler: We deserved win

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler thought his side were worthy of all three points in their goalless draw with Port Vale but was nevertheless pleased with the performance. The Gills were the better team throughout but they were forced to settle for a point despite Tony Sinclair having a header cleared off the line and Mark Bentley being twice denied by the woodwork."I think we deserved to win the game. We were the better side over the 90 minutes and it was a terrific response from everyone after conceding seven in our last away game at Accrington," he said."We had a kick in the teeth with injuries to our two strikers Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa in the week, but the boys didn't let that affect them. We played very well against a good side."We've set our standard against a team who were at the top of the table and I'm not worried about this long away run without a win. If we keep doing what we did and maintain that level of performance, we will be fine."I'm a bit disappointed because the shift the boys put in was worthy of three points. Mark Bentley was very unlucky when he hit the post and we missed other chances. But the Accrington result (7-4) has given us a kick up the backside and to keep a clean sheet at the home of the league leaders is no mean feat."
