Hessenthaler reflective after play-off hopes disappear

Andy Hessenthaler chose to look at the bigger picture and refused to put his side`s play-off disappointment solely down to their 3-1 defeat at champions Chesterfield. Danny Whitaker's 15th goal of the season in the 54th minute put the hosts in front and although Cody McDonald replied, Jack Lester and Deane Smalley pounced late on. Hessenthaler said: "We certainly looked well in the game, we believed we needed a point before so we set ourselves out to be quite solid and organised and I thought we did that. At half-time things were going exactly how we planned but for all our effort we switched off and the full-back got down the side of us which cost us the second goal and after that it was very difficult to get back into it. "But there are no fingers pointed or anything like that, we have to look at ourselves over 46 games. It's not about this result, we should not have put ourselves in this position. "Effort wise, the boys gave me everything and we now need to rebuild, the hard work starts now and we start thinking about next season. "First part of the season we had to do better but, from November onwards, we got into promotion form and went on a fantastic run and it's only been in the last four games that we've let it slip away. It's disappointing but, like the chairman said, the hard work starts now. We will sit down and look where we go next season."
