Hessenthaler hails "tremendous" Gills

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was thrilled his side were able to claim their first away win in 18 months following their 1-0 victory over Oxford. Cody McDonald scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute when pouncing on a weak backpass from Oxford's new captain Jake Wright. The striker, on a season-long loan from Norwich, rounded keeper Ryan Clarke and slotted home with ease. Hessenthaler said: "It was a fantastic win and a tremendous effort from the players. They were outstanding. "The spirit in the camp has been tremendous. We carried it on from last week. I know we lost then but I felt it was coming. I could tell on the training ground that we were making big strides. "We worked our socks off and that's what we've got to do for the next 29 games. We've got the monkey off our back and now we've got to look forward."
