Hessenthaler abandons striker search

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has been forced to call a temporary halt to his pursuit of a new striker due to the financial constraints at the club. Hessenthaler wanted cover for first-choice forward pair Adebayo Akinfenwa and Cody McDonald but it now looks like he will have to stick with what he has got - though he has not ruled out making an emergency loan signing should there be major injury problems. Lloyd Owusu was one target and he was due to train with the Gills next week, but he has since joined Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton. Hessenthaler told Kent News: "We couldn't offer Lloyd anything without having a look at him. Luton were able to straight away and good luck to him. We haven't really got any other targets at the moment, but agents are phoning all the time about forwards. "We're going along okay at the moment, Luke Rooney's making an impact coming on so we have options in attacking areas, but if there's a major problem we'll have to go and get someone in on loan. "Talking to the chairman the money is tight, we have a good squad and if anything it would be a loan more so than signing someone for money."
