Hess: We needed that

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler admitted his side's 1-0 victory over Burton Albion may not of been pretty but was much-needed.Both sides hit the bar in the first half, with Shaun Harrad's free-kick rattling the frame of the goal for the Brewers before Cody McDonald was unlucky not to break the deadlock with a header. However, McDonald managed to grab the only goal of the game to register the Kent side's second win of the season against fellow strugglers Burton."Sometimes you have to win ugly," said Hessenthaler. "It wasn't a good first half, there was no real tempo to our game. They started better than us, we got sucked into the long ball game a little bit and we didn't play enough football."We passed the ball much better in the second half, but we know we can do better. It's about points at the end of the day and we had to grind them out today."We've kept a clean sheet against a very strong side. I thought we defended very well today as a group and I'm delighted for our keeper Lance as well."
