Hess rues defensive slips

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler was left counting the cost of his defence failing to put into practice what they had been going through on the training ground after his side lost 4-1 to Norwich in the first round of the Carling Cup. Grant Holt and Chris Martin hit two goals apiece as the Canaries fought back in style to cancel out Chris Palmer's opener for the Gills. Hessenthaler said: "It's very disappointing because it wasn't a 4-1 sort of game. The scoreline was flattering to Norwich but you can't defend the way we did and expect to get away with it against a good side. You'll always come unstuck. "We had worked hard on the training ground on keeping a high line against them because, with respect, while they have got two good strikers they aren't the quickest. "But we were defending far too deep and got punished for their first goal. Holt has had plenty of time to pick his pass but if we had been defending higher up the pitch that wouldn't have happened. "If they are not prepared to listen to what we are saying then we'll change it. But it is still early days and I hope the team can learn from this and bounce back against Hereford on Saturday."
