Hess refused to criticise Davies

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler refused to criticise debutant Callum Davies after he was sent off in the 3-1 home defeat to Crewe. Davies saw red after hauling down Clayton Donaldson before the Railwaymen finally took the lead through Byron Moore. And in first-half stoppage time Donaldson doubled the lead, taking Moore's cross and drilling home from six yards. The Gills gave themselves a lifeline seconds after the break, Chris Whelpdale thumping home a header from Chris Palmer's corner, but Shaun Miller secured the points when he broke away to slot home. The Gills were beaten by Dover in the FA Cup but Hessenthaler said: "I actually do not feel as bad as I did last week. When things are going against you they go against you and they really did. "It was never a sending off in my book - Donaldson overran it and went down very easily. Callum Davies is devastated - he was in tears in the dressing room. "He said sorry to me but I told him he had nothing to be sorry about. We are hurting as a group and this was a very private week for us. But I really cannot have asked for more from the players and if we keep putting in shifts like that we will be fine."
