Hess backs Bayo bulk

Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler believes Adebayo Akinfenwa can provide the physical threat that his side lacked last season. The former Northampton hitman has signed a one-year deal at the Priestfield Stadium after a proposed move to Southend fell through. "He's a big boy but let's all look at what he does, and what he does is score goals," Hessenthaler told the Kent Messenger. "He scored 17 last season for Northampton and we need goals if we are going to get promoted. "I think he is certainly different to what we've got. He gives us another person up top and competition for places. I'm absolutely delighted we've got him." Akinfenwa is set to make his Gills debut in Thursday night's friendly with SPL side Hearts, and Hessenthaler has urged fans not to jump to conclusions about the striker's physical condition. "People will look at him and think he's overweight but looking at him in person and his medical the boy is pure power and muscle," he added.
