Gills swoop for Richards

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has tempted Southend United defender Garry Richards to move to the Priestfield Stadium for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old former Colchester United player has signed a deal that will keep him with the Gills until June 2010.

Stimson told the club's official website: "Garry's a player I've watched for a long time and I've been trying to sign him for a few years.

"I rate him highly and know that he'll come in and complement our squad. He's an aggressive central defender and has a great hunger and desire to succeed."

Richards made 14 appearances for the Shrimpers this term following last summer's switch from Colchester.
