Gillingham manager Mark Stimson has returned to his non-league roots to sign Stuart Thurgood on loan from Grays Athletic.
Thurgood, 26, played under Stimson during his time in charge at Grays and has joined the League One club on a month's loan.
Earlier in the week, Stimson failed in a bid to lure Adam Miller, Stuart Lewis and John Nutter to the Priestfield Stadium from former club Stevenage Borough.
"He has probably been the best central midfield player in the Conference for the last two years and an opportunity has come up for me to take him and I'm delighted," Stimson told the club's official website.
"As a player, Stuart Thurgood is very competitive. He plays in the centre of the pitch and can use the ball well.
"He is someone who will add to the squad and compete for that central midfield spot."
