Gillingham caretaker-manager Mick Docherty has left the club following Saturday's 5-0 thrashing at Swindon Town.
Speaking after the heavy defeat, Docherty claimed neither he nor fellow caretaker Iffy Onuora had any realistic chance of replacing former boss Ronnie Jepson on a permanent basis.
But chairman Paul Scally has now revealed Jepson's former number two has left the Priestfield with immediate effect.
"It was a tough call letting Doc go," he told the club's official website.
"He was left in an almost impossible situation and has worked hard for Gillingham, so we naturally thank him for that.
"I've made the decision in the best interests of our football club and I'm getting ever closer to naming our new manager. We wish Mick well in his future career."
