Gills taking no risks with Spiller

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler has revealed Danny Spiller's injury is more serious than first thought. Spiller requires surgery on a badly fractured finger he picked up against Chesterfield and Hessenthaler has stated if the midfielder is rushed back into action, he may lose part of his finger. "Spills is struggling unfortunately. People might say that it's only a broken finger but it's actually quite bad," he told the club's official website. "The ball hit him on the top of the finger and he has a really bad break which will need surgery. The finger is only hanging on by one ligament on the knuckle joint. "If he comes back too early he risks losing the top part of his finger or may have to have a rod inserted for the rest of his life. "I think it's a serious matter in terms of his life beyond football. He will have the surgery this week and then we will know more about the recovery time as we can see how the ligaments respond to surgery. It's a tough one for him and he is gutted."
