But the 26-year-old is now fully fit and Gills boss Stimson wants to bring him back to Priestfield in a permanent deal, although he faces competition for the former Blackpool man's signature.
Stimson told the club's official website: "He would be a good addition and could be a long-term signing if we can sort something out with Colchester.
"There are four clubs interested in him at the moment so it's the player's decision to make. He's played a reserve game now and he came through that without any problems.
"We know he's interested so we've got a good chance but now it's up to him to make a decision."
Gillingham are just two points above the relegation zone and have won just one of their last nine League One games.
