Gills boss set to keep the faith

The Gills were beaten 4-2 at Tranmere on Saturday, but after describing parts of his side's performance as "absolutely fantastic", it seems unlikely Stimson will make too many changes to his starting XI. Stimson recalled goalkeeper Alan Julian and midfielders Mark Bentley and Jack Payne to the side at Prenton Park, and all three could start again, although Stimson has hinted that he may elect to rest teenager Payne, which would see Kevin Maher return to the midfield engine room. Julian is likely to keep his place ahead of veteran Simon Royce despite being beaten four times on Merseyside, while Chris Palmer is likely to have to make do with a place on the bench again. "I'm going to try and keep a settled side if I can," Stimson said. "Obviously we'll have to look after Jack because of his age as we don't want to play him too much and risk burn-out but I thought he had another good game in the middle of the pitch, moved the ball sensibly and he hasn't done anything wrong." Defender Simon King and midfielder Stuart Lewis are both out until October at least with ruptured ankle ligaments, while forward Dennis Oli is approaching full fitness after his knee injury but this game will come too soon for him to return.
