Gillingham ease to victory over Crewe

Josh Wright's first goal for Gillingham saw the promotion chasers beat Crewe 3-0 to claim their first win in five games.

Dominic Samuel's close-range finish got the hosts off to the perfect side before an own goal from Jon Guthrie just after an hour and Wright's late third confirmed Crewe's defeat, with the relegation-threatened visitors now winless in seven.

Gillingham started on the front foot and after 12 minutes Luke Norris headed back towards the six-yard box and Samuel got in front of his man to head in from close range.

Samuel should have bagged a second four minutes before the break when Ben Garratt missed a punch but the striker was caught on his heels and headed wide.

Despite not offering much going forward during the first 45 minutes, Crewe almost went in at half-time level when Zoumana Bakayogo rattled the crossbar from 20 yards.

Crewe improved after the break but after 61 minutes Samuel crashed a shot from inside the box against the woodwork and Guthrie was unable to adjust his body in time to clear, inadvertently tapping into his own net.

In injury time Wright found the net via the post after a Jermaine McGlashan pull-back for his first goal since scoring against Gillingham for Leyton Orient last season.
