Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro gives Shrewsbury a survival boost against Gillingham

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro struck with 10 minutes remaining to lift Shrewsbury to a 3-2 win at Gillingham to boost their chances of survival.

After Sullay Kaikai put Shrewsbury ahead with his seventh goal in his last nine Sky Bet League One games, Cody McDonald's first strike of 2016 levelled things up on the stroke of half-time.

Shrewsbury went back ahead through Andy Mangan after the break and while Jake Hessenthaler cancelled out another lead, the visitors went ahead for a third time through Akpa Akpro.

This was Shrewsbury's first win in eight games and leaves them four points clear of the drop zone, while Gillingham slipped out of the play-offs and have now not won in six attempts.

After McDonald's headed against the post inside five minutes the Shrews went ahead after quarter of an hour with a low Kaikai drive.

A McDonald 20-yard rocket into the top right corner levelled things just before half-time but Mangan acrobatically put the visitors back ahead on 56 minutes.

The Gills were level once again just five minutes later though when Hessenthaler slotted home, but Akpa Apro's deflected effort won it.
