Chesterfield win to dent Gillingham's promotion push

Goals from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Lee Novak saw Chesterfield win 2-1 at Priestfield to dent Gillingham's promotion push.

Dominic Samuel was put through on goal inside the first minute but failed to keep his lofted effort down, while Max Ehmer saw a strike turned away on the post by midfielder Ollie Banks on 30 minutes.

The deadlock was broken on 36 minutes following some exquisite wing play from Gboly Ariyibi down the right and Ebanks-Blake tapped in the resulting cross.

Deep into first-half stoppage time, Novak was encouraged to shoot from range and duly obliged with a wonderful strike from 30 yards out to give Chesterfield a 2-0 lead at the break.

The Gills took control of proceedings after the restart and after 52 minutes Tommy Lee was at full stretch to deny Samuel with a header from inside the box.

The pressure told 10 minutes from time when Emmanuel Osadebe pulled one back but Rory Donnelly missed a golden opportunity minutes later to level the game with a free header eight yards out.
