Port Vale put another dent in Gillingham's play-off hopes

Gillingham's winless run extended to four matches with a 2-0 home defeat to Port Vale damaging their play-off hopes.

First-half goals from Ajay Leitch-Smith and Carl Dickinson left the sixth-placed Gills two points clear of Barnsley and now just six clear of Vale.

The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute when Leitch-Smith latched onto a Ben Purkiss long-field pass and lashed into the top corner for his 12th goal of the season.

Worse was to come for the Kent side two minutes later when the right-back again delivered long this time into the feet of Carl Dickinson who slotted past Stuart Nelson.

Boos rang around Priestfield Stadium on the half-time whistle.

But Gillingham fans thought they had reduced the arrears on the hour mark when Jak Alnwick fumbled Bradley Dack's low drive but Richard Duffy cleared off the line.

Gillingham continued an onslaught into the final third but the away side were valiant in defence, blocking shots from Brennan Dickenson and Rory Donnelly respectively as they could find no way through.
