Blades out of bottom four

Conor Coady's first-half strike lifted Sheffield United out of the Sky Bet League One relegation zone as they beat Gillingham 1-0 at Priestfield.

The on-loan Liverpool midfielder, who also struck in the Blades' 3-1 FA Cup victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday, scored with a low drive four minutes before the break, seconds after Chris Porter had hit the top of the post from close range.

Gillingham's players believed play should have been stopped in the build-up to the goal, after debutant Ryan Inniss was injured in the box.

Porter also had a first-half effort disallowed for offside and Gills skipper Adam Barrett made crucial blocks to stop volleys from Michael Doyle and Harry Maguire either side of half-time.

An unmarked Billy Paynter also saw his low effort on the hour mark well saved by Stuart Nelson.

Adebayo Akinfenwa came the closest for the hosts, who had won their last three at home, but his header from Stuart Nelson's goal-kick landed on the roof of the net.

Blades keeper Mark Howard denied Connor Smith and Leon Legge also fired wide from Bradley Dack's corner but the visitors held on.
