Gillingham 0-0 Oxford Utd: Match Report

Gills held to draw Cody McDonald saw a last-minute header come back off the post as Gillingham were denied the points despite dominating second-half possession in their goalless draw with Oxford. The in-form Norwich loanee thought he had snatched all the points when he beat Oxford keeper Ryan Clarke from close-range - only for the U's to be saved by the woodwork. The Gills flew out of the traps and almost took the lead in the third minute when Matt Lawrence's header was saved by Ryan Clarke. James Constable had the best chance of the game for the visitors, but his close-range shot on the turn whimpered into the side netting in the ninth minute. His strike partner Tom Craddock, who has scored in five of the U's last seven games, also squandered a half-chance when he found himself unmarked after a quick free-kick, but he scuffed his effort wide seven minutes before the break. McDonald's strike partner Adebayo Akinfenwa spurned the game's best chance when he pulled a volley wide from eight yards out after Clarke had spilled John Nutter's free-kick. Oxford's best second-half chance came when Gills midfielder Kevin Maher inadvertently sent Steve MacLean through on goal but Maher was rescued by a tackle from Lawrence. Substitute Simon Hackney also came close for the visitors but he drilled his effort across the face of the goal in the 79th minute before McDonald's last-gasp chance.
