Ghana captain John Mensah became the first player to be sent off at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations when he was red carded halfway through the second half against Botswana Tuesday.

Mensah fouled striker Jerome Ramatlhakwane just outside the penalty area at the Stade de Franceville in the opening Group D match and, as he was the last defender, the Senegalese referee did not hesitate to order him off.

Mensah had had an eventful match as he capitalised on poor defending at a corner to poke the ball over the line after 25 minutes and give four-time champions Ghana a 1-0 lead they retained entering the closing stages.
