Ghana's Annan suffers personal tragedy
Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan lost his mother Thursday but has opted to stay back with the team ahead of this weekends 2012 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final here against Tunisia.
According to the official website of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Annan's mother, Sophia Sampson, died after a brief illness Thursday.
GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi said in a condolence message to the player that they will continue to support him in this difficult moment of grief.
"We have spoken with Anthony and his family back in Ghana to offer our support at this very difficult time," read Nyantakyis message.
"As Anthony has decided not to leave the Nations Cup to go home, the GFA, the coaches, the players and staff will continue to offer him our constant support."
The 25-year-old Annan has been an ever-present feature in the Black Stars march to the last eight of this years Nations Cup.
He is currently on loan at Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem from German Bundesliga outfit Schakle 04.
