World Cup 2014 - 89 days to go: Late drama at Wembley

15 March 2014 09:33

The year was 1966, the venue was Wembley, the minute of the game was 89. I am of course talking about the FIFA World Cup final between England and West Germany and the later had just scored from a free kick to level the match 2-2.

England had looked set to claim the title within normal time when the referee awarded a free kick to West Germany with just one minute remaining. The ball was launched goalward and Wolfgang Weber a little known central defender poked the ball home despite the handball protests from England players.

Wolfgang Weber made 53 appearences for West Germany, scoring two goals in a career that finished in 1974. Weber went on to manager SV Werder Bremen between 1978-1980.
