Low happy with winning finale
11 Jul 2010 - 11:05:44
Germany head coach Joachim Low was full of praise for his side after they beat Uruguay 3-2 in the World Cup third-place play-off in Port Elizabeth.
A late Sami Khedira header was enough to down the South Americans, with Low pleased that the tournament finished on a high note for his players.
He commented: "In the second half, when we were forced to dig deep, we saw the mental strength the team had to resist and then snatch victory.
"I'm pleased with that, the team deserves it. Altogether, what we've achieved, we never would have expected it eight or nine months ago."
Meanwhile, Lowe also paid tribute to striker Miroslav Klose, who sat out the game due to injury and missed out on a chance to add to his 14 World Cup finals goals.
Klose would have drawn level with Ronaldo's all-time record of 15 if he had found the net, but instead had to watch on due to a back problem.
"He really wanted to play, but after training on Saturday he said to me that would not be able to take his place in the team," Low added.
"He was disappointed, but he knew that we couldn't allow a player who was only 80 per cent fit to take part."
