Low: We deserved to lose

Germany coach Joachim Low admitted his side deserved to lose after slipping to a 2-1 Group B defeat at the hands of Croatia.

Low's much-fancied side were second best for vast spells of the match in Klagenfurt and a late consolation from Lukas Podolski was unable to prevent the Croats from securing the win and their qualification for the knock-out stages.

Germany must now win their final group stage match against co-hosts Austria to be certain of their own place in the least eight.

"We deserved to lose," admitted Low. "We were unable to play our combinations or play fluidly.

"The Croats pulled back after scoring their first goal and we were unable to penetrate their defence, which is why we have to accept the defeat.

"We cannot be satisfied. We were unable to do what we know we can do.

"We didn't manage to play through the midfield, we played too many high balls and our game off the ball was bad."
