Germany beats Canada in Women's World Cup opener
Some 18 million viewers in Germany watched the home team beat Canada 2-1 at the start of the women's World Cup here, ARD public television said on Monday.
This was the highest ever number of viewers for a women's football match, according to the channel which won a 60-percent television market share for the event.
Some 8.2 million viewers on Sunday were males aged over 14, while 6.4 million were female. The others were children under 14.
Some 75,000 spectators watched the match played in Berlin's Olympic Stadium.
Having won both the 2003 and 2007 editions, Germany's women team is bidding to complete a hat-trick of titles, and this time winning on home soil.
