Germany training an eye-opener for retired striker Miroslav Klose

Miroslav Klose says he is surprised by how quick football is now that he has hung up his boots and taken his first steps in coaching.

Germany's record goalscorer officially ended his playing career just a few weeks ago while accepting an invitation to work with the national team as he studies for his coaching badge.

He was given a first insight of what he can expect on Tuesday when he joined coach Joachim Low with the Germany squad ahead of Friday's World Cup qualifier with San Marino, and he admitted it was an eye-opening experience.

"I've always been following football games, but when you are out here on the training field, you see even more how much the quality and the pace has increased since my time as a player," the 38-year-old Klose said at a press conference.

"I am happy to have been given this possibility. I thought about it for a long time and decided to see the other side for a change.

"The opportunity to work with a World Cup-winning coach is not something many people get.

"I just want to soak it all up and take it with me for my further development. I was integrated right from the first meeting and it's all a huge honour.

"I can get loud, but these are only my first steps so I don't have to. I did get loud at times as a player."

Klose scored 71 goals for his country, ending his international career with victory at the World Cup final in 2014 - at least it seems like he did.

"I just want to say before anybody asks about my starting XI that Klose is still available for selection," said Low with a smile.
