Gigi De Canio has been sacked as coach of Serie A club Genoa, club president Enrico Preziosi said on Monday.

De Canio's sacking comes after the club threw away a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 to AS Roma on Sunday.

Preziosi said that the club, who are tenth in the Serie A with nine points after eight matches, have been in contact with former Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri.

Del Neri has not coached since leaving Juventus after they finished seventh in the 2010-2011 season.

De Canio is the fourth coach sacked this season after Palermo's Giuseppe Sannino, Chievo's Domenico Di Carlo and AC Milan's Massimiliano Allegri.

Last season a record 19 coaches were sacked in the 20-team Serie A.
