Serie A strugglers Genoa on Monday announced the return of Davide Ballardini as head coach of the club following the sacking of Gigi Del Neri.

Del Neri was sacked late on Sunday as the north-west coast side returned to the relegation zone following a 2-0 home defeat to minnows Catania.

A statement by Genoa on Monday said: "Genoa CFC announces it has entrusted the technical management of the team coach Davide Ballardini, who already led the team in the 2010/11 season."

Ballardini coached Genoa during the 2010-11 campaign when he won 11, drew seven and lost 10 of the 28 league games for which he was in charge.

Genoa, who are third from bottom of the 20-team league, face leaders and champions Juventus this weekend.
