Top-flight trio all seal passages
25 Aug 2010 - 22:09:05
Fulham, Everton and Newcastle United all avoided potential League Cup banana skins after ensuring their safe passage to the third round with victories over lower league opposition.
Fulham made light work of League Two Port Vale at Craven Cottage after coasting to a 6-0 victory.
Two goals from Zoltan Gera, a brace from Clint Dempsey, one from Bobby Zamora and a first for the Cottagers from Moussa Dembele completed the rout.
Belgium striker Dembele joined from AZ Alkmaar earlier in the month for £5million and looked sharp on his Premier League debut against Manchester United on Saturday.
The 6-0 win also confirmed Mark Hughes' first competitive victory as Cottagers boss following back-to-back league draws at the start of the new season.
Everton were similar easy winners after putting five past Huddersfield Town of League One.
Marouane Fellaini and Jack Rodwell put the Toffees 2-0 up in the first half, before Louis Saha, Leon Osman and Jermaine Beckford from the spot also got on the scoresheet.
Johnny Heitinga's first-half own goal was the only slight negative for David Moyes' side.
In the evening's final League Cup game, Newcastle were made to work hard before running out 3-2 winners at Accrington Stanley.
Ryan Taylor opened the scoring for the Magpies, but the League Two club went in level at the interval courtesy of Ray Putterill.
Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands settled the nerves of the Premier League club at a damp Crown Ground, before Sean Hessey's stoppage-time consolation reduced the deficit.
