Schwarzer keeps Toffees at bay

Everton dropped to the foot of the table after a goalless draw at Fulham to complete a miserable week for manager David Moyes. They find themselves propping up the rest after fellow strugglers West Ham beat Tottenham. Having crashed out of the Carling Cup with a midweek defeat at Brentford, Everton must wait at least another week to claim their first league win of the season. Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar saw an early effort saved by Mark Schwarzer who then had to react smartly to gather a dangerous cross from Phil Neville. Fulham had a decent chance shortly before the interval when Carlos Salcido crossed expertly from the left and Dickson Etuhu headed powerfully but straight at Tim Howard who made a routine save. The home side went close to edging in front just before the hour mark when Clint Dempsey forced a desperate save from Howard before Damien Duff's follow-up was deflected to safety. Dempsey went close again before Schwarzer made a brilliant fingertip save to keep out Yakubu's low piledriver. Schwarzer thwarted Yakubu once more before the Nigerian striker blew another couple of chances late on. His first effort bobbled agonisingly wide of the right post before he missed a sitter at the death.
