Player of the day: Clint Dempsey
Today’s Player of the Day is Fulham and United States of America midfielder Clint Dempsey. Since his arrival at Fulham in 2007, Dempsey has gone on to make a numerous amount of records for the London club including being the first American to score a hat trick in the English Premier League and is the current all time leading Premier League scorer for Fulham.
Known for his toughness and resilience, Dempsey played two games with a broken jaw in 2004 before the team trainer diagnosed it, and upon his return, he played through the pain of a sprained ankle. Despite usually playing in wide positions, he frequently scores close-range goals and has scored repeatedly with diving headers in crowded situations. His tenacity in midfield combined with his audacious dribbling skills frequently results in opponents fouling him, and Dempsey has gained a reputation for fierce play.
Dempsey started his career for MLS side New England Revolution after he was selected in the 2004 MLS Super Draft. In his first season he made 23 appearances and scored seven goals. He helped the Revolution to two MLS Cup Final’s during his time at the club and his performances were awarded when Dempsey was named as the 2004 MLS Rookie of the Year.
In January 2007, Dempsey signed for Fulham for a deal reported to be worth £2 million, this made him the most expensive US export to the Premier League. He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on January 20th 2007. He scored his first goal for Fulham on the 5th May as he struck the only goal of a 1-0 win over Liverpool. This goal saved Fulham from relegation and effectively guaranteed their place in the top flight for the following season.
Since his debut Dempsey has really gone on to become a fan favourite at Craven Cottage and his performances have bought many plaudits. He has won the Fulham fan’s Player of the Season award on two occasions as well as becoming their leading scorer in the Premier League. He has currently scored 60 goals in 225 appearances for Fulham.
Dempsey has been heavily linked with a move away from Fulham during the 2012 summer transfer window, with the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal all rumoured to be interested in signing the American. With just one day left to go Fulham fans will be hoping the club can do all they can to keep hold our their star man.
